Spotify Introduces Video ads

Finally, our two favourite things are merging, music and video ads. Spotify announced an addition to their advertising product this week. Here’s all you need to know:

Spotify have a user base of about 40 million active users. 30 million are non-paying users and the remaining 10 million are Spotify premium users. Currently advertisers can choose from the following ad specs: Audio Ads, Display Ads, Billboard Ads, Homepage Takeovers, Branded Playlists, Lightbox and Advertiser Pages. Users spend an average of 146 minutes listening on Spotify everyday. In the last year, Spotify mobile users have tripled.

INCREASINGLY MOBILE

Spotify mobile growth

How will Spotify video ads work?

There will be two video ad units available to advertisers.

Sponsored sessions
This feature allows users to watch a video advertisement in exchange for 30 minutes of uninterrupted ‘ad-free’ music.

Details:

  • Offer your audience uninterrupted listening in exchange for a video view
  • Currently available on mobile only
  • Users are served an offer for 30 minutes of ad-free listening via a title card
  • User must complete 15 or 30 second video spot to receive reward
  • All video impressions are user-initiated
  • Only completed views are billed
  • Branded end card invites further engagement

Spotify mobile ads example

Video takeover
This is similar to the current Spotify advertisements in that it will interrupt the listening experience and play the video ad as opposed to the existing audio offering.

Details:

  • 15 or 30 second video spot with companion display unit
  • Served during commercial ad breaks between songs in a music session
  • Currently available on desktop only
  • 100% share of voice
  • 100% viewable: video only served if desktop app is in view
  • Only completed views are billed
  • Companion display unit invites further engagement

Who are the advertisers?

Similar to Instagram, Spotify have selected a small number of brands to test the video ads. They include Coca-Cola, Ford, McDonalds, NBC Universal Pictures, Target and Wells Fargo. Most of these brands are already advertising with Spotify.

When?

The new video ads will only be available in the following markets in Q4 on this year: United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain and Sweden. They will be available globally in 2015.

Planning and Measuring Your Ad Campaign

Google provides a number of tools to help you research, plan, launch and measure your ad campaign. When planning any campaign, it’s vital to know your audience and where they are online (for more on this, here’s a handy post). You do not need to advertise on all platforms that Google provides – choose the one that will give you the most engagement and drive sales – read on to find how you can choose the best platform and ad format to increase your revenue.

Tip: All mobile activity is huge at the moment and will continue to grow massively over the next 12 months (currently 75% of mobile video ads happen in-app) so make mobile advertising a priority when planning a campaign.

Planning Tools

First and foremost, you need to have the following locked down before you kick your ad campaign off:

Target Audience: Specific interests, demographics and device usage, from this research you can make a better decision as to what platform you will use to place your ad.

Budget: With correct planning and execution, you’re less likely to go over budget. Use the Google AdWords Keyword Planner to get some budget estimates.

Video Marketing at the World Cup

With the World Cup only days away, video marketing has been the main focus for the biggest brands out there. Nike, Samsung and Castrol are battling it out for the top shared video of the summer and Coca-Cola have launched their biggest video marketing campaign ever.

Unruly Media just published the below infographic showing the ‘World Cup of Video Shares’:

World Cup advertising infographic

Nike

Their video just got over 1.3 million shares and 2,109,356 views already! Football greats like Ronaldo, Neymar and Rooney are the stars and it’s a roaring success. What’s even better is that the tournament hasn’t even started yet! This one will definitely hit the 2 million share mark before the winners are crowned.

Samsung – ‘The Training’

With 39,373,389 views and 971,504 shares. Samsung have really struck gold with this one! Again, it features the talents of the wing wizard Ronaldo and an alien invasion!

Castrol

Neymar Jr. & his freestyle team take on Gymkhana king Ken Block in his rally car. This is probably one of the boldest of the videos. So far it’s got 962,206 shares and 14,933,666 views.

Coca-Cola – Video Marketing Champions

Coca-Cola take top spot with their ever evolving marketing efforts. They’ve launched “Everyone’s Invited”, their biggest marketing campaign yet.

Key elements of the campaign include

  • “One World, One Game” television and digital film
  • “Where Will Happiness Strike Next” documentary-style short films
  • The official music anthem for the Coca-Cola 2014 FIFA World Cup™ campaign
  • The Happiness Flag – the largest photomosaic ever created featuring fan faces and messages
  • FIFA World Cup™ Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola
  • A uniquely Brazilian visual identity

How to Put Your Video Ad on Your Website

So you’ve purchased your video ad (from Viddyad) and want to add to it your website. We know that video is more engaging and that when you put it on your site, you’re 53 times more likely to appear on the first page of Google. But there are so many ways to put your video up on your site – which way is best?

YouTube

This is the default hosting solution in Viddyad. Once you purchase your video commercial, you’re only one click away from putting it live on YouTube for everyone to see.

How to put a YouTube video on your website:

Once you’ve uploaded your video to YouTube, you should see options beneath your video, as shown below:

YouTube Embed code

Click, Share, then Embed. You should now see the code that you will need to include in your webpage to show the video. Below the “embed code” you will also see options, where you can set the size that you want the video to be when it appears on your site. You can also set whether you would like YouTube to “show suggested videos” when the video is finished playing. We would suggest turning this off, as this might encourage your visitors to leave your page after viewing the video, or worse, it could show videos which your competitors may have on YouTube.

Advantages of using YouTube on your site:

  • YouTube is the second largest search engine, so when the video is played on your site, it will count to your YouTube views, which only increases your brand’s authority
  • It’s fast and easy, YouTube has the largest collection of videos online so in using it, you’re letting the market leader look after all of the hassle of hosting video
  • It’s free!

Disadvantages of using YouTube on your site:

  • YouTube can include ads for other services, before, over or during you video.
  • Interactivity, you can place links on top of your video, but these links can only point to other YouTube videos, playlists or approved partner links.

Vimeo

How to put a Vimeo video on your website:

You can easily add your video to Vimeo once you’ve downloaded it from Viddyad. However, you will need to sign up to Vimeo Pro if your video is for commercial use . Once you’ve uploaded your video to Vimeo, click the “Share” button at the top right of your video:

Vimeo share and embed

You will now see a pop up which includes the “embed” code that you will need to include in your webpage to show the video, as shown here:

vimeo embed code

Below the embed code, you will also see options where you can set the size that you want the video to be when it appears on your site. You can also change the color of the video controls. A tip here would be to turn off the “intro” information, which can appear over your video, such as the title, and deselect the option to “Show text link underneath this video”.

Advantages of using Vimeo on your site:

  • No ads – Vimeo won’t add any other commercial elements to your video
  • It’s fast and easy, Vimeo is another market leader and your video will be supported by a large and fast network of servers, while also being searchable on their highly trafficked site
  • Options – Vimeo has a nice combination of options for color and size

Disadvantages of using Vimeo on your site:

  • You will need to sign up for Vimeo Pro, which isn’t free
  • No interactivity – you can’t place links over your commercial
